Why Superfoods are all the Rage, Especially Now

3 min read

Superfoods are continuing to be all the rage. Did you know that the word "superfood" wasn't actually created by nutritional scientists or dietitians? In fact, it may have been used in the 20th century as part of a marketing strategy with bananas. Who knew?!

Today we continue to see the terms “superfood,” “superfruit” or “supergrain" marketed at the grocery store. What does it mean and is there any science behind it?

What is a Superfood

A superfood is defined as “a food that is rich in compounds (such as antioxidants, fiber, or fatty acids) considered beneficial to a person’s health." While some “superfoods” are proven to be healthy and backed by nutritionists, many argue trendy monikers like "superfoods" are just fad and are popularized to the point of misrepresentation.

Research pointed to the ideal diet consisting of mostly plants with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthful animal products like ghee, Greek yogurt and organic cheeses. Superfoods might be a good way to dip your toes into the world of healthy eating (and understanding the nutritional value of the food you eat can be empowering), but there are lots of healthy foods out there to explore, even if they're not dubbed "super".

Superfoods in the Market

When the coronavirus pandemic picked up steam, shoppers frantically searched for "superfoods" in online marketplaces to aid in wellness, health and energy boosts. Superfoods are considered to be nutrient powerhouses that provide large quantities of antioxidants, phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. The high vitamin content found in superfoods can help your body protect from itself from illness and keep you at your healthiest. When added into a well-balanced diet, superfoods can promote heart health, improve energy levels and even reduce the effects of aging.

We know superfoods like açai, blueberries, almonds, cacao, chia seeds, goji berries, green tea, pomegranate, seaweed and wheatgrass are indeed nutritious, but experts say to focus on creating a "super plate" of different healthy and flavorful foods instead of focusing too much on the "overhyped" foods. A diet rich in variety is important to gain the benefit of eating a wide array of essential vitamins and minerals.

"Superfood" Beauty

We're seeing sleep, stress and energy be main talking points when discussing super food ingredients. While we don't make claims about our products, we do have a few that we think fit the bill.

Relaxation: Lip Food Protect (with lavender essential oil), Vanilla Bean Lip Scrub (vanilla comforts!) Hemp Vanilla (vanilla is oh-so comforting and smooth) and Mongo Kiss Vanilla Honey (both vanilla and honey are delightfully comforting and warm)

Energy: Bee Free Lemon-Lime (lemon and lime are very uplifting!) and Sweet Mint (spearmint is super invigorating!), Mongo Kiss Peppermint (peppermint will perk you up!), Lip Food Nourish (lemon & grapefruit essential oils are also uplifting!), Mint Lip Scrub (mint for the win!) and Hemp Vanilla Mint (mint is our go-to for an invigorating boost).

And don't just think it's the superfoods in food that benefit you - be sure to include some of these ingredients in your beauty arsenal. Did you know that a majority of the products we carry include a superfood (and it's food-grade, too!) ingredient or two? Let's dive into a few of them.
