How to Revive Melted Lip Balm (No, You Don’t Have to Toss It!)

2 min read

Uh-oh... did your favorite lip balm turn into a gooey puddle in your beach bag?
Don’t worry—melting doesn’t mean it’s ruined. In fact, with a few simple steps, you can totally bring that balm back to life. We got you.

Why Does Lip Balm Melt?

Natural balms (especially the good-for-you kind made without synthetic waxes) are sensitive to heat. That’s because they’re made with plant-based oils and butters like coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax—which all have relatively low melting points. Translation: if it’s hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, it’s hot enough to liquify your lip balm.

Can You Still Use It?

Yes! A melted balm is not a wasted balm. As long as it hasn’t been contaminated (like rolling around uncapped in the sand... we don’t judge), it’s totally safe to reuse. You just need to re-solidify it properly.

How to Revive Your Melted Lip Balm

Here’s a step-by-step to bring that balm back from the melt:

  1. Keep it upright.
If it’s in a tube or tin, stand it upright on a flat surface so the balm can re-solidify evenly.

  2. Cool it off slowly.
Pop it into the fridge (not the freezer!) for about 30 minutes to an hour. Slow, gentle cooling helps prevent separation or graininess.

  3. Check the texture.
Once firm again, give it a test swipe. It should be good as new—smooth, solid, and ready to go!

Bonus Tip: Prevention Is Key

  • Don’t leave your balm in a hot car, beach bag, or sunny windowsill.

  • Store it in a cool, dry place—or carry it in a small insulated pouch during hot months.

  • If you’re heading on a summer adventure, consider keeping a “backup balm” somewhere safe. (You can never have too many lip balms anyway... right?)

TL;DR: Don’t Toss It—Chill It!

Natural balms are sensitive, just like us sometimes. But a little chill goes a long way in reviving your summer-soggy stick.
