Week #1: Clean Up your Personal Care

It’s time to face it. When it comes to health, it’s not just about what we put in our bodies that matters. It’s about what we put on our bodies, too. When you put something on your skin, there are times when it can enter your bloodstream without being metabolized. Blood tests show that many of the substances commonly included in deodorant and soap products can weasel their way past the epidermis and into the body. In fact, the underarm tissue contains hormone receptors, which could react to some of those same deodorant ingredients. Some of these concerning ingredients include, parabens, aluminum, triclosan, phthlate, butane and isobutane and fragrance.

We recommend Alaffia: Alaffia uses innovative ingredients derived from plants and minerals and never any Synthetic Fragrance, Parabens, Sulfates, Animal Testing, Propanediol, Phthalates, Aluminum, Mineral Oil, Propylene Glycol, Triclosan or Silicone. They're also Fair for Life Certified and carry the MADE SAFE seal, which verifies products are not made with ingredients known or suspected to cause harm to human health.

Chemicals in common soaps are no joke. They can disrupt our hormones, promote allergies, lead to reproductive issues and increase risk of some cancers. If we are washing our bodies with soap that contains harmful ingredients every single day, this adds up over a lifetime to wreak havoc on our health.

We recommend Virginia First Tea Farm: Their soap and cleansers feature green tea. Green tea's antiviral, antibacterial and properties enrich skin with unique nourishment and vitality. Never any formaldhye, triclosan, sodium bisulfate and is biodegradable, gluten-free, vegan and never tested on animals.

Cleansing and anti-acne products that include chemicals actually have the reverse effect on skin - alcohols actually break down the skin barrier and cause dryness, which in turn promotes aging! Some cleansers also have oils that are not non-comedogenic which means they may clog pores, worsening your symptoms.

We recommend Ecolixir Facial Oils: Designed to remove makeup and impurities, this cleansing and rejuvenating facial care system is rich in essential fatty acids to hydrate, nourish and improve skin's elasticity and gentle skin care oils to nourish, help skin retain moisture, fight free radicals and maintain a youthful appearance.

Here are some tips and natural alternatives to using toxic, chemical-based personal care products:

  • Avoid products with undisclosed fragrance. The word “fragrance” on labels means there can be many mystery ingredients inside. Without full transparency, it’s impossible to know what you’re being exposed to.

  • Products labeled as “antibacterial” or “germ-fighting” might contain triclosan. Choose natural antibacterials like tea tree and clove

  • Skip the antiperspirants, which often contain aluminum to reduce sweating. Our bodies are designed to sweat as a means of detoxing and cooling down. We know that sweating can be inconvenient, but it’s necessary for a healthy body!

  • Whiten your smile with a dollop of baking soda once a week and gently brush

  • Avoid products like dark permanent hair dye, skin lighteners, perfumes and hair straighteners as they can cause allergic reactions, irritations and can even cause cancer
